Walking home at night in London
London is large and varies a great deal from street to street and from hour to hour. A route that feels fine at 18:00 can feel very different at 01:00, so it helps to compare options before you go.
What to consider
- Main roads and bus routes. Often lit and busy, and night buses run on many routes.
- Station exits and interchanges. Check the last stretch from the station to your door, which is where many people switch from busy streets to quiet ones.
- Parks, canals and estates. Cutting through parks, canal paths or underpasses can be quicker but are often less lit and less overlooked at night.
- Late-night venues. Areas with many bars and clubs change character after closing time.
How SafeWalk UK helps
SafeWalk UK uses street-level crime data published through data.police.uk for the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police areas, together with lighting, CCTV and safe-space data from OpenStreetMap. Compare route options and use the After Dark view to see how the score changes by hour.
Crime data is delayed and anonymised, so treat results as a guide only. More: night walking tips and how the score works.
